   Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What are the main advantages of artificial nail enhancements?

A. For people with a tendency towards nail-biting or picking, artificial nail enhancements are a great way of encouraging you to stop. If you invest time and money into something you are more likely to keep up with them and take care of them. Also, nail art is a huge advantage and will last until your next fill in.

Q. Will my natural nails continue to grow under the enhancement or overlay?

A. Yes.  This is why you need to maintain your enhancements.

As your natural nail grows, the acrylic grows with it; creating a gap from your eponychium (cuticle area). Without a fill in or rebalance the natural nail is more likley to be dammaged if it grows out too far and the nail recieves any trauma to it.

Q. Do nail extensions ruin my natural nail?

A. If they are put on and taken off correctly, they will not ruin your natural nails. If they are pulled, ripped or chewed off then yes, they will damage your natural nail. NEVER take them off at home, unless you soak them the proper way. Also, if the nail beds are prepped the correct way and extra attention whille filing with the e-file.

Q. Do you use an electric file?

A. Yes. E-files can cause damage to your nail plate if your technician isn't properly trained and takes the time to be careful. I however, care about your natural nails underneath your enhancements. There are no "red rings of fire" and hardly ever is there cuts when filing. I use safety bits and take my time while filing.

Q. What is "Maintenance" and how often do I need it?

A. Maintenance is carried out approximately every two weeks, 3 weeks max. It involves reshaping and re-strengthening the nail, replacing any nails you may have broken or any lifts that have occurred (which is very minor with my returning clients). Without maintenance the nail becomes unbalanced and will break. This leads to breakage at the stress points on your nail plate and can be very painful.

Q. What do I do if I have had nail extensions and now want them off?

A. Never pry or pull the nail extensions off as this will damage the natural nail plate and will be very painful. Come back to me and I will properly remove them.

Q. How long can you keep nail extensions on for?

A. You can keep extensions on indefinitely, provided you have them maintained on a regular basis and a new set applied about 8-10 weeks if preferred. Nails do not need to breathe. They don't have lungs. The nail plate gets the nutrients and oxygen you need from your blood vessels inside your body.
